Large Loads

Can large loads benefit Midland Power members?

Yes. When developed under these safeguards, large energy users can benefit members by increasing electricity sales. This helps spread the co-op’s fixed costs – including poles, wires, and substations – across more kilowatt-hours, supporting greater long-term rate stability.

How do these policies protect Midland Power members?

Requiring large loads to cover their own costs protects the co-op and its members from the financial risks associated with serving these projects. Existing members will not be responsible for the upfront investments or ongoing expenses if a project is modified, delayed, scaled back, or shut down.

Where will these projects get their electricity?

The current and future generation being developed by Midland Power’s wholesale power providers is intended to meet growth in our region’s traditional energy needs—not to serve new large loads or data centers.

Large-load members must privately finance or otherwise secure the power needed to operate their facilities.

Is Midland Power required to serve these developments?

Yes. As an electric cooperative with a defined service territory in Iowa, Midland Power has an obligation to serve members within our service area. However, that obligation does not require our existing members to subsidize the investments needed to serve new large loads.

What is a large load?

Large loads are commercial or industrial developments that require substantial amounts of electricity. These may include data centers, artificial intelligence facilities, and cryptocurrency projects.
