Midland awards scholarships to area students

Midland Power recently awarded $3,000 in scholarships to deserving area students.

Ella Henningsen of Ames was awarded a $1,000 Midland Power scholarship.

Henningsen, a senior at Gilbert High School, plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall, where she’ll major in enterprise leadership. After graduation, she hopes to return to her rural roots and work to reinvigorate small-town Iowa, making rural communities vibrant and attractive to young professionals.

In addition to maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Henningsen is also an accomplished athlete, being only the second female basketball player in Gilbert High history to score 1,000 points and have 500 rebounds.

Isabella Waechter of Livermore also received a $1,000 Midland Power scholarship.

Waechter, a senior at Bishop Garrigan Schools in Algona, will attend the University of Iowa in the fall where she wants to obtain both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She plans to major in speech and hearing sciences and minor in American sign language and music, then go on to become a clinical speech pathologist, working with deaf children.

An honor roll student with a 4.0 GPA, Waechter is active in choir, band, speech, and drama, and regularly volunteers helping enrich the lives of children in her community.

Abby Patel of Ames was selected to receive a $1,000 Basin Electric Power Cooperative scholarship.

A senior at Gilbert High School, Patel plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall where she's considering majoring in engineering.

Patel is accomplished both academically, earning a 4.0 GPA and taking dual credit courses from both Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa State University, as well as athletically, participating in cross country, basketball, soccer, and track.

Midland's scholarship program is funded through unclaimed patronage and designed to help develop future area leaders.

Applications for next year's program will be available in early December at MidlandPower.coop/Scholarships.

We congratulate this year's scholarship recipients and all our wonderful area graduates!
