Midland Power’s commercial members can now purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) directly from the cooperative under a new rate rider approved by the board of directors at their June meeting.
The program allows any non-residential commercial or large commercial member to purchase RECs in quantities starting as low as 500 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually.
RECs are market-based instruments representing the property rights to the environmental, social, and other non-power attributes of renewable electricity generation. RECs are issued when one MWh of electricity is generated and delivered to the grid from a renewable energy resource.
Businesses typically choose to voluntarily purchase RECs to help meet self-imposed sustainability goals or when required by law or regulation to meet renewable energy standards or carbon reduction targets.
Midland will source RECs through our wholesale power providers, Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative.
